“One of the most exciting roots-based music groups to emerge from the New England Conservatory in many years. Their individual chops and adventurous approach make Night Tree a band to watch for.” -Brian O'Donovan

Night Tree was born on one of the first mornings of my junior year at the New England Conservatory back in 2016. All of us current NEC students at the time, we decided to start trying to book shows after we won the NEC Wildcard Honor's Ensemble Award. Our music is often labeled as "folk music" and is mostly original with improvisation. Our sound correlates with our individual and varying backgrounds, including but not limited to Klezmer, Classical, Irish, Swedish, and Afro-Cuban music. Our music has brought us to performance venues all over the East Coast, to Folk Alliance International in Kansas City in 2017, and to the Korro Musikfestival in Sweden in the summer of 2018.We have recorded two incredible albums with Seamus Egan from SOLAS that we are very proud of. As we reach 2019, the band appears to be shifting form, and we are excited to see what will be born in the new year!
We are Zach Mayer on saxophone, McKinley James on cello, Chris Overholser on fiddle, Sunniva Brynnel on accordion and lead vocals, Julian Loida on percussion, and myself on fiddle and the occasional viola.
